Forced Arbitration In The Workplace: A Symposium

When:  Feb 27, 2014
Please join The Employee Rights Advocacy Institute For Law & Policy (The Institute) on February 27, 2014 for Forced Arbitration In The Workplace: A Symposium at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. Convened by The Institute in collaboration with the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law (BJELL), this academic symposium will serve as a springboard for legal scholarship by panel participants on The Institute’s priority issue for workers—forced arbitration of employment disputes. Articles from the symposium will be published in BJELL’s Spring 2014 issue.

By bringing together academics, practitioners, and others in the legal community to engage in a thoughtful dialogue and help raise awareness about forced arbitration of workplace disputes, the symposium represents an expansion of The Institute’s commitment to ensuring workers’ access to the civil justice system. The program will include discussions on emerging issues regarding class action waivers and class arbitration, outcomes of employment arbitration across the country, historical perspectives on the Federal Arbitration Act, the impact of arbitration law on contract law and federal preemption doctrines, and legal developments in enforcing or invalidating forced arbitration clauses.

The distinguished panel of speakers includes:
  • F. Paul Bland, Jr., Public Justice, PC
  • Professor Alexander J.S. Colvin, Cornell University, School of Industrial & Labor Relations
  • Professor Catherine L. Fisk, University of California, Irvine School of Law
  • Joseph D. Garrison, Garrison, Levin-Epstein, Richardson, Fitzgerald & Pirrotti, PC
  • Cliff Palefsky, McGuinn, Hillsman & Palefsky
  • Professor Jean R. Sternlight, University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Law
Registration for the symposium, which is open to all, begins in late 2013. For more information about The Institute, please visit our website at www.employeerightsadvocacy.org.
