ACTION ALERT

Senate Democrats intend to set up a procedural vote after next week’s recess on the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would update the Equal Pay Act to close the pay gap between women and men and to facilitate wage discrimination lawsuits by employees. The vote will take place on June 5, 2012 at 2:15 p.m.

The bill would require employers to show that any wage discrepancies are based on genuine business requirements and are related to specific characteristics of the position that are not based on gender. The bill would also prohibit retaliation by companies against individuals who raise wage-parity issues, provide resources to help women develop their negotiating skills, and would include further research to understand the lingering causes of wage discrepancies between men and women.
